Cataract surgery

Cataract surgery: from cloudy to crystal clear vision

Success rate of over 99%

At birth, our natural ocular lens is completely clear. This clarity slowly diminishes as we age. At some point, the lens becomes so cloudy that it disrupts the vision. Then, cataract surgery is the only solution. Eye drops or modified glasses cannot improve vision. Fortunately, cataract surgery has a very high success rate of over 99%. It is a frequently performed and very safe procedure.

Cataract surgery, one of the most performed procedures in the world

Cataract surgery is probably the most commonly performed procedure known to medicine. Worldwide, this involves millions of procedures every year. It is also one of the safest procedures. Thanks to modern techniques, the risk of complications is very small. Over the years, the instruments used have become increasingly precise. There are also now sophisticated implants on the market that can also solve glasses problems. This way, after the procedure you are freed from not only the cataract, but also from your glasses.

How does cataract surgery work?

During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision of a few millimeters in the eye. First, the current lens is pulverized, after which the released lens particles are immediately aspirated from the eye. Then, an artificial lens is placed.

Who is eligible for cataract surgery?

In addition to age, there are other factors that can accelerate the onset of cataract. For example, certain genetic disorders or a poor lifestyle. For example, we see more cataract in smokers and people with a one-sided diet. Exceptionally, cataract can also occur in children.

The first complaints often appear in traffic in the evening and at night, when the headlights of oncoming traffic display disturbing halos. After that, reduced vision also occurs during the day. Gradually, colors also become less bright.

What can you expect during and after surgery?

Procedure

Because the procedure is performed through a very small incision, there is little discomfort during the treatment. Altogether, removing the natural lens and implanting the artificial lens takes less than 10 minutes. After the procedure, you receive a protective cover on the eye. You can already remove that the next morning.

Aftercare

The day after the procedure, you come in for follow-up. Your vision is usually quite good by then. You use eye drops for 4 weeks. Because both eyes are operated with one week in between, you will have some problems with the difference between the two eyes in the interim. In practice, this is usually well tolerated.
