  # Sunglasses after the eye laser treatment

Spectacles with shaded glasses have been in use since the 18th century. These glasses were worn by patients with photosensitive conditions. Such people were able to function in daily life because of these shaded glasses. From about 1920, glasses which also block ultraviolet light were used. These glasses not only decreased the intensity of light, but also partly blocked the non-visible, possible harmful, ultraviolet.

Sunglasses certainly have a protective function. Ultraviolet is linked to certain [eye disorders](/en/eye-conditions) such as cataract, glaucoma, pterygium, and still others. The protective function is perhaps more important when you're located towards the equator. Besides, the abovementioned eye disorders depend on a number of causes, and just whether or not you wear glasses. Statistically speaking, someone who lives is North Africa and never wears glasses has a higher risk to develop an obscure eye lens called [cataract](/en/eye-conditions/cataract). Other major factors are nutrition, smoking and genetic predisposition.

 Sunglasses after eye laser treatment

There isn't a clear answer yet as to whether or not sunglasses should be obligatory for a certain period after the treatment. It certainly improves your own comfort during the first months after the [eye laser treatment](/en/treatments). A clear evidence of a more speedy recuperation when wearing sunglasses is absent.

 Our advice

In any case, it is advisable to have good sunglasses at hand after being treated by [PRK](/treatments/prk), [Femto-LASIK](/treatments/femto-lasik) or [ReLEx smile](/treatments/relex-smile). The eyes are quite **photosensitive** after an eye laser surgery, which is nothing unusual. During sunny days, sunlight may seem even unbearable and sunglasses may relieve some of this discomfort. Most sunglasses on the market in Europe have good **ultraviolet filter**. Polarized glasses doesn't protect the eyes any more than non-polarized glasses. The only advantage is that they reduce reflective glare.

It is advisory to wear sunglasses on sunny vacations or during occasions where you're often exposed to a lot of ultraviolet light (**during ski vacation, sail vacation**). This is for your own **comfort**.
